The department of psychiatry of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, became a department at the former Ikeja General Hospital in 1984. The department was started by Dr. O.B. Olugbile. He was the only psychiatrist working then at the department. The department had only one psychiatric nurse: Mr. O.R. Tonade. The department provided then outpatients' services and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry with other clinical departments. In February 1998, the second psychiatrist – Dr. A.O Coker joined the department. By the year 2000, other psychiatric nurses had joined the department. In 2004, a 15-bed ward was added as part of the admitting facility of the department. Patients with acute psychiatric disorders are admitted for short term care, management and rehabilitation. The psychiatric ward also assists in the training of medical students by giving general orientation on psychiatric management and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatric Practice. The staff strength also grew to about 30 personnel. As at today, the department boats of .three consultant psychiatrists, three resident doctors, two clinical psychologists, one social welfare officer, one occupational therapist and 22 psychiatric nurses. The department of Psychiatric plays an active role in clinical services, teaching, research, public awareness in enhancing doctor-patient relationships and the provision of Mental Health Services at the Primary Healthy Care level. The department also has a psychology unit headed by a clinical psychologist. Medical students at the 300 level receive lectures in clinical psychology before their junior posting in medicine; while medical students at 500 level are posted toe the department of psychiatry for a period of four weeks. For the duration of their posting are exposed to the objectives of the department. The departments of Psychiatry is also partnering with Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos and department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idiaraba to further offer medical students exposure to the full range of health services.
