This department was formerly under physical Medicine department until February, 2007, when the Chief Physiotherapy was appointed Head of Department and the name changed to physiotherapy department. VISION Our vision is to provide standard qualitative physiotherapy services in keeping with the vision and mission of LASUTH and make the hospital a centre of excellence in health care delivery. Presently the dept. has on its staff list (11) Eleven Physiotherapists (1) One Nurse (1) One Administrative Officer (1) One Medical Record Officer (1) One Attendant The department caters for both the in-patients and out-patients of the hospital including those on Medical and Surgical emergencies as well as critical care unit of the hospital. Physiotherapy services are presently being offered in 4 specialty areas namely: Medicine (Including Neurology, cardio-respiratory etc), Paediatrics and obstetrics & Gynaecology. Operationally, 3 units are functional as a result of staff shortage. These are Medicine Surgery Paediatrics and obstetrics & Gynaecology Each unit is supervised by a unit head, who in turn reports to the HOD. The department opens by 8:00am and closes at 4:00pm. Out patient Clinic commences at 9:00am. Each Unit has different days for the out-patients and patients on the wards. However, provisions are made through Physiotherapists on call to attend to emergency cases and patients requiring intensive care on daily basis and if need be more than once daily. MISSION The mission of the department is to render comprehensive physiotherapy services to deserving or referred clients / patients in the areas of preventive, curative, promotive and rehabilitative physiotherapy based on medical clinical assessment information and sound professional judgment with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of life of the clients /patients. PHYSICAL STRUCTURES The department is located in the out patient wing of the hospital. It occupies two sections popularly referred to as PHYSIO I and PHYSIO II . Physio I accommodates gymnasium, some treatment cubicles, seminar room and offices and the medical records section. Conditions seen here are mainly Medical/Neurology cases, Paediatrics cases and Obstetrics/Gynaecology cases. On the other hand, the physio II, which is located within the surgical clinic area, also has some treatment cubicles and an office. Conditions seen here are mainly Musculoskeletal, Orthopaedics and surgical cases.
HEALTHRON Attached to the department is a unit with an Electrotherapy machine called healthron. The machine produces electrical stimulation (electrostatic) which penetrate the physical system without pain or discomfort; it has therapeutic values in the management of chronic diseases, diseases prevention as well as health promotion. It has been found useful in the co-management of conditions like: Hypertension, Diabetes, Stress related diseases, Arthritis, Back pains, Neuropathic Pains, Insomnia, Liver problems, Cerebrovascular accident (CVA), Autonomic nervous disorders among others. Attributed to its use, hence the applications of the device on clients / patients have been put strictly under the supervision of the physiotherapists. The machine is been operated jointly by the State Government and Tosmaris Nig. Ltd. Although unknown side effects have been documented with Healthron, there are contraindications and certain precautions to be taken into cognisance before its application on individual. Physiotherapy students (from various institutions) on Clinical postings/ SIWESS programme; Nursing and Medical students on physiotherapy postings; Dietetics students Ongoing Research Retrospective study on burns Psychosocial manifestations among stroke survivors (collaborative study between the physiotherapy department and the psychiatry department) The department is willing and ready to participate with any departments in collaborative studies.
