The department caters for children up to twelve (12) years of age. By policy, hospitalization and feeding of inpatients is free while a token fee is charged for laboratory investigations. Services The department renders services through a number of outlets: Inpatient services: Neonatal unit There are two neonatal wards, one each for inborn and referred babies within the first twenty eight (28) days of life. The neonatal ward for inborn babies is located in Ayinke House while the ward for referred babies is located near the Children Emergency Ward. Currently, our services support special care but facilities are being rapidly developed to cater more comprehensively for babies requiring intensive care. Paediatric wards A and B Children beyond the first month of life who require hospitalization are admitted to Paediatric wards A or B. Children Emergency Room This is probably the busiest service unit of the department. The unit receives patients from all over Lagos State and neighbouring villages in Ogun State. It has a capacity for 20 children. Outlook The Department of Paediatrics is undergoing very rapid physical transformation in terms of infrastructure and facilities. Courtesy of the “DEUX PROJECT”, which is delightfully transforming the entire teaching hospital, a four-floor complex destined to house our staff and services is nearing completion. With it should be solved our most pressing need for work space, improved facilities for investigation and training. CLINICAL ACTIVITIES Outpatient services Consultant Paediatric Outpatient clinics These clinics run every weekday except Wednesdays (almost entirely devoted to academic programs). It is the main follow-up outlet for general paediatric cases and those in specialised areas like cardiology, respiratology, neurology, nephrology, haematology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, dermatology and neonatology. Effort is being made to establish an endocrinology clinic as well. General Paediatric Outpatient Clinics The clinic runs every weekday and caters for non-emergency cases including children presenting for the first time and those who fall ill in between scheduled clinic visits. ANING PROGRAMS Postgraduate training The department has a young but vibrant postgraduate training program having been accredited by the West African College of Physicians in the year 2004. Residents and their trainers are regularly exposed to self-improvement, continuing medical education programs both within the institution and elsewhere. Since accreditation in 2004, modest successes have been recorded at postgraduate examinations with six (6) passes at Primary Fellowship level and four (4) at Part One level. Arrangements are being made to invite the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria for an accreditation visit.
