Haematology is a department that has both clinical and laboratory responsibilities. The scopes of responsibilities are: Treatment of all haematological disorders presenting in LASUTH. This includes haematological consults from other specialties. Treatment of HIV/AIDS related diseases in partnership with IHVN Provision of laboratory and blood banking support for all specialties in Hospital Research and public enlightenment on issues related to the above. Teaching medical students and resident doctors clinical and laboratory haematology The department has the following sections (1) CLINICS : The clinic is managed by a team of doctors, nurses, social workers and counselors. PARTNERSHIPS: The department is in partnership with the following organizations: HOPEWORLD WIDE ORGANISATION (see www.hopeworldwide.org ): Provides HIV counseling and testing Home based care and support for HIV/AIDS patients. INSTITUTE OF HUMAN VIROLOGY OF NIGERIA (see www.ihvngeria.org ). Provides free laboratory support for HIV/AIDS patient. This includes CD4 count, viral load, haemogram, biochemical tests and screening for co morbid diseases. Training of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and monitoring and evaluation officers in all aspect of HIV/AIDS management. Free drugs including antiretroviral drugs and drugs for opportunistic infections. Home based care and care of vulnerable children. Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV Community outreach. TEMITAYO AWOSIKA FOUNDATION: This foundation has been supporting sickle cell patients since year 2002 with Free folic acid and paludrine Financial support for patients on admission. Social support for sickle cell anaemia patients. CLINIC DAYS:
FACILITIES AVAILABLE AT THE CLINIC ARE: DAY CARE: This is situated within the clinic. It is 3 bedded with our experienced nurses supervising treatment that may involve: Rehydration for a short period Chemotherapy for stable patients. Out patient venesection and blood transfusion Wound dressing The day care is opened from 8a.m. to 4 p.m. OTHER FACILITIES ARE: RECORD UNIT DEDICATED TO THE DEPARTMENT. DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR ROOM RESIDENT'S LABORATORY HIV COUNSELING ROOMS DRUG ADHERENCE COUNSELING ROOMS PHARMACY FOR DISPENSING IHVN SUPPLIED DRUGS. HOME BASED CARE AND SUPPORT TEAM 2. HAEMATOLOGY LABORATORY SERVICE : There are 2 sections: The haematology section: this is lead by Mr. S.A. Awolowo who is an experienced laboratory scientist. The following tests are done routinely : automated cell count haemoglobin genotype clotting profile blood film and bone marrow aspiration This section offers a 24 hour services but routine samples are expected to reach the laboratory by 12 noon. BLOOD BANKING SERVICES: Mrs. C. O. Adeboboye heads this unit There are 3 units in this section: Blood donor unit Blood screening unit Blood banking unit Blood donor unit: Donors, mainly hospital based donors, pass through the following stages; donor registration, counseling, screening for adequacy of blood, screening for HIV/AIDS and medical screening before they are bled. There is a drive for the recruitment of voluntary donors. There are provision for giving voluntary donors badges, vests and face caps. They are also given donor cards. Those who are not fit to donate are referred to the consultant attached to the blood bank The donor clinic is opened on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Blood Screening Unit LASUTH is a zonal headquarters for the screening of blood for transfusion by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service. There is a screening centre that screens blood for HIV, hepatitis and syphilis using with approved methodologies and kits. This centre also screen for private laboratories around Ikeja. Blood sent to the centre and found inadequate for transfusion are not returned but discarded by the centre. Only blood negative to this infections are released to the hospital for transfusion. The unit screens on Wednesday and Friday. BLOOD BANK: This unit operates on 24 hours basis. Blood is appropriately stored and cross matched for transfusion in the unit. The unit handles all serological tests. Patients who come to collect blood are expected to replace the number of units collected and pay for the processing of blood. Though blood may be issued out in emergency without fulfilling these conditions. It is not acceptable to collect blood from the Blood Bank and return it after warming the blood. OLUPITAN TRAINING: The department trains both undergraduates and resident doctors for the M.B.B.S. examinations and the medical postgraduate examinations in haematology. Activities include; Regular lectures for the 400 level students Practical sessions for the 400 level students Clinical haematology lectures for students in the clinical class Weekly seminars for resident doctors Regular ward rounds with resident doctors Regular blood film round with resident doctors Developing training manuals for students and resident doctors The resident doctors participate in the clinics and they also take call duties in the laboratory. RESEARCH: The consultants are members of staff of the college and as such are interested in research. There is a research laboratory dedicated to the department in the college. The following facilities are available in the research laboratory: flow cyto-meter, high definition liquid chromatography, gel electrophoresis machine, cold centrifuge, polymerase chain reaction etc. Meanwhile research interests are in HIV/AIDS, sickle cell disease, coagulopathy and transfusion medicine. Research cooperation and exchange of ideas and methods are desirable by the department.
