The department of family medicine is one of the clinical departments in LASUTH, and will soon become one of the academic departments in the college of medicine, Lagos State University. It evolved from the General Out-Patients Department of the then general hospital, Ikeja. This evolution stems from the growing realization worldwide that in the long-run, it will be detrimental to the care of individuals and their families, if the trend to compartmentalize care continues unabated. The need to have a specialty with the philosophy and capacity to train doctors who will have the skills and knowledge that will make them capable of solving most of the health problems, that most members of the community have most of the time, created the need for family medicine. The challenges presently facing the heath systems in most developing countries make this specialty a sine qua non. It is structured to provide composite healthcare (curative, promotive and preventive) to the populace, irrespective of age, sex, or the presence or absence of infirmity. It employs the services of physicians who have special interest in general clinical medicine. In addition to clinical services, the department also runs a 5- year residency programme for doctors in family medicine, as well as research projects in diverse areas of medicine. CONSULTANTS Presently, the department has only one consultant who is also the departmental head: Dr. A.O Adedokun MD FMCGP. WEEKLY CLINICAL ACTIVITIES All departmental activities (i.e. clinical, academic and research) take place within the family medicine building which is presently located in the north-west region of LASUTH campus, opposite the eye institute. The department is responsible for the following clinics:
