The critical care unit has been described as the most effective life support facility in Nigeria. It is a centre incorporating a theatre for advanced surgery, an intensive care unit and an amenity ward facility.

In order to keep the unit busy at all time, the unit has decided to start admitting critically ill patients and also actively manage post operative patients with different types of complications from other units from both within and outside the hospital, in Lagos and other states of the Federation. The unit is serviced by a well equipped laboratory with facilities for blood analysis and other investigations.

The unit is headed by an intensivist/surgeon who oversees the affairs of the unit. However, the hospital management audits the activities of the unit from time to time. The nursing staff that serve the department are on the pay roll of the hospital.

The unit charges fees which are commensurate with the services. Basically, the unit was set up to offer critical care and also be ‘self sustaining' i.e. it was not primarily for profit making.

The unit is at liberty to utilize the services of specialists from both within and outside LASUTH and both categories of consultants are expected to be remunerated accordingly.
