General Hospital Ikeja was established primarily to provide health care delivery for the people of Ikeja and its environments. It was initially a cottage hospital serving a very wide and thinly populated area. The foundation stone of Ikeja General Hospital was laid on the 25th June, 1955 by Honourable S.O. Igbodare, the Minister of Public Health of the Western Region of which Ikeja was a part. With increase in population and the need to provide a health care delivery system that is commensurate with the state that is also known as the “Center of Excellence” and that is expected to provide improved health care services this time around not only to the populace around Ikeja and its environments but the citizens of Lagos State at a tertiary level, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Governor of Lagos State in his wisdom, elevated the hospital to a teaching hospital in April 2001; although the proposal for the elevation had been under discussion for several years. With this new status therefore, it behooves on the hospital to have it's own medical school to produce it's own medical personnel in order to raise the level of health care in the state. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) recently visited the hospital in order to accredit the course that are taught at the College of Medicine and also to inspect clinical facilities at the hospital. The Lagos State Government has invested a huge sum of money in improving its personnel and facilities to put the hospital in good stead for the greater challenge of a teaching hospital.
